Everyday Courage and Building Trust. A Conversation with GEN (R) Martin Dempsey

In this conversation with GEN (Ret) Martin Dempsey (Duke MA’84), he shares the common leadership lessons he learnt from his 41 years in military service and his now 8th year as the Chairman of USA Basketball. GEN(R) Dempsey and COLE Executive Director, Sanyin Siang, discuss:

1) The value of leading with everyday courage and helping others develop and lead a life that is reflective of everyday courage.

2) The importance of creating a space for reflection. The practice of reflection is important to winning, what GEN(R) Dempsey calls a “Campaign of Learning”.

3) How empowering your team through building trust can help create a sense of belonging.

GEN(R) Dempsey is also a COLE Advisory Board Member Emeritus. As a Rubenstein Fellow at Duke University, GEN(R) Dempsey has taught courses at Duke’s Sanford School of Policy with American Grand Strategy (AGS) Director Peter Feaver, and at the Fuqua School of Business.
