Sustainability challenges are becoming more urgent, even within the last 5 years, said EDGE Executive Director Dan Vermeer in a recent interview on the podcast The Measure of Everyday Life. “I think people have a much more palpable sense of volatility and of disruption,” Vermeer said. He pointed to the California drought and recent super-storms like Sandy that have raised awareness and a sense of urgency general public.
Vermeer talked about societal sustainability challenges as well as the ways in which companies can be thinking strategically about these challenges. “I think companies that head down this path are ones that value a deep and sophisticated understanding of the social and environmental factors that are in the environment that they operate in,” he said. “Because they realize that that’s where all the biggest risks come from and that’s where the biggest opportunities are.”
