Mackenzie Sullivan, Sector Director for Social Impact & Sustainability Careers, Fuqua's Career Management CenterFuqua School of Business

Mackenzie Sullivan, Sector Director for Social Impact & Sustainability Careers in Fuqua’s Career Management Center

When it comes to careers, one of the areas of growing interest among MBAs is the sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) sector. Over the past 10 years, corporations have been increasingly focused on managing their social and environmental impacts and understanding the cost and revenue implications of initiatives that range from managing the human rights practices of their overseas factories to installing solar panels on their corporate campuses. As sustainability becomes a business issue of increasing strategic importance, it is also becoming more established as a career path. In 2014, the data source Wanted Analytics estimated that sustainability jobs had more than doubled in demand in 4 years. Sustainability recruiter Ellen Weinreb likewise documents growth in the most senior of these roles – the Chief Sustainability Officer.

We took a moment to sit down with Mackenzie Sullivan, Sector Director for Social Impact and Sustainability Careers in Fuqua’s Career Management Center to get her take on the sustainability/CSR hiring space.  Here is our Q&A with Mackenzie. Continue reading

Alumni network at Bay Area reception for MBAs and MEM/MBAs

Duke MBA students and alumni at sustainability networking event in San FranciscoOn July 9, Fuqua alumni who share an interest in sustainability met up for a joint networking event in San Francisco with other MBAs from Stanford, Michigan, Yale, MIT, and Cornell.  The event, which was a collaboration between the six schools, was designed to facilitate more connections between Bay Area professionals who are working in careers at the intersection of business and environmental and social impact. It included both MBA alumni and alumni of dual-degree business-and-environment programs, like Duke’s MEM/MBA program. Current MBA students from the six partner schools who are interning in the Bay Area this summer were also invited. Duke MBA students and alumni at sustainability networking event in San Francisco

To facilitate intermingling, the event included several rounds of “speed networking” organized around four thematic areas: Sustainable Cities & the Future of Energy; Food, Agriculture & Ecosystems; Impact Investing, B Corps & Social Entrepreneurship; and Global Supply Chains & Corporate Sustainability.

Participants came from organizations as varied as Chevron, Facebook, Levi Strauss, SunEdison, New Island Capital, and The Nature Conservancy, among others. Opower hosted the event in their new San Francisco office.Duke MBA students and alumni at sustainability networking event in San Francisco

“We hope this is the first of many collaborative networking events between our six schools,” said Katie Kross, managing director of EDGE. “These professionals have so much in common, and it was a wonderful opportunity to connect them with others who share their interests in business leadership and sustainability.”
