Summer Internship with IMA Financial Group
Jordan Mullens, Daytime MBA 2026
I interned for IMA Financial Group, an integrated financial services company focused on protecting the assets of their widely varied client base through insurance and wealth management solutions. Working for a mission-driven company is important to me, and it’s one of the main reasons why I chose IMA. IMA’s sustainability roadmap and strategy is in its infancy, and I knew that I would have the unique opportunity to have a significant impact during my summer internship.
I advanced sustainability at IMA in three ways: first, I created a phased enterprise-wide waste management plan; second, I researched opportunities to engage in the voluntary carbon market and advised on air travel emissions mitigation; third, I helped plan events and created a sustainable event guidebook. During each project, I interacted with people across departments and management levels. The stakeholder engagement and project management skills I honed through FCCP laid the foundation for my success with each project. The proficiencies I developed through coursework at the Nicholas School of the Environment enabled me to quickly become the company’s subject matter expert.
This experience enabled me to understand the challenges of building a sustainability program from zero and working in a two-person team. It also emphasized the collaborative aspect of sustainability, the importance of customizing solutions, and the need to incorporate diverse perspectives to create effective and enduring initiatives. I look forward to sharing my knowledge of effective corporate climate solutions with my classmates.
This internship was supported by the Summer Internship Fund, which enables first-year Duke MBA students to learn about the rewards and challenges of using business to drive positive impact without making a significant financial sacrifice. The program enables organizations that otherwise could not afford to hire MBA student interns to benefit from students’ expertise. Funds are raised through student fundraising and from donors who believe in the mission of the program. If you would like to contribute, you can donate online using your credit card.
