Summer Internship with NC IDEA
Thomas Cheng, Daytime MBA 2024
I interned at NC IDEA, a foundation supporting economic development in North Carolina through entrepreneurship. The organization gives grants to early-stage startups, and for my summer project, I advised 15 of them on marketing, pricing, and industry research. It was a great experience to learn about different industries and work with directly with founders. Beyond the projects with individual startups, I enjoyed thinking and talking about the broader questions of economic development. What does “success” look like? What resources are required? Who needs a seat at the table? How can we ensure development is sustainable and equitable? I encourage all students – whether or not they pursue an “impact-oriented” internship – to think through these types of issues in their line of work. Think beyond your specific project, company, or industry – how is the work you’re doing contributing to something greater?
This internship was supported by the Summer Internship Fund, which enables first-year Duke MBA students to learn about the rewards and challenges of using business to drive positive impact without making a significant financial sacrifice. The program enables organizations that otherwise could not afford to hire MBA student interns to benefit from students’ expertise. Funds are raised through student fundraising and from donors who believe in the mission of the program. If you would like to contribute, you can donate online using your credit card.
